DIY: Felt Napkin Rings (Сделай сам: Кольца из фетра для салфеток)

    Thanksgiving is just around the corner. And lately I’ve been thinking about table setting for the celebration. I’m imagining a simple, but elegant table adorned with a centerpiece, candles, china, table cloth and fabric napkins. But, I don’t want to go over my modest budget—so I’ve decided to make napkin rings using felt and cotton scraps.
    You can make them too—it’s super easy and fast. For the detailed instructions go to MerrimentDesign.  

    Here is my version:
    You will need: scraps of brown and orange felt fabric, scraps of cotton fabric with leaf motif, a small piece of fusible web, scissors, rotary cutter, cutting mat, needle and matching thread.

Iron the fusible web onto the back of the cotton fabric with leaf motif

Cut a desired number of leaves from the fabric, and the same number of leaf shapes from the orange felt. Peel back the paper backing off the leaves. Iron all the cotton leaves to the felt leaves.

Stitch the leaves to the rings with a running stitch.

     Скоро в Америке будут праздновать день Благодарения. И я тоже буду празновать, хотя я до сих пор не могу вобрать в себя все американские традиции связанные с этим праздником. Ну не выросла я в этой культуре и не впитала с молоком матери все эти обычаи. А потому чувствую себя все еще новичком, когда речь заходит о следовании традиционному меню и украшению стола.
    Некоторые элементы сервировки отличаются от того, что мы делаем в России/Украине. Декоративные кольца для салфеток—одно из таких отличий. Ассортимент колец в здешних магазинах для дома большой. Есть деревянные, пластмассовые, обтянутые тканью, украшенные бусинами. В общем выбор огромный.
    Я же решила, что сделаю кольца сама из фетра. Результат на фото. По-моему неплохо смотрится, напоминает мне деревенский стиль. А вы где-то видели такой вариант оформления салфеток?     Although I’m curious about new fashion trends, I tend to buy jewelry or clothes that will last more than a season. But, once in a while, I might splurge on something that is “hot” right now. For example, the minute I saw this cute Peter Pen collar necklace, I was hooked and purchased it. It’s a perfect accessory for a little black dress of a plain black top.
    I’m loving it and have already received a couple of compliments at work :). Great trend! I don’t know if it’s going to last or not, but I’m enjoying it!

    Редко я покупаю себе модные вещицы. Мода ведь быстро проходит и потом вещь просто лежит без дела. Уже с молодости у меня был наклон в сторону классики. Но исключения иногда случаются.
    На этот раз мне просто ужасно понравились бусы в виде воротничка. Такая оригинальная идея. В общем я не удержалась и купила себе это колье. Возможно, что уже через год оно уже не будет актуально, но зато сейчас можно пофарсить. А вы поддаетесь искушениям моды? Что-нибудь прикупили себе новомодное за последнее время? Ваша Оксана.

Weekly Snapshots: Strawberry Tree (Снимки недели: Клубничное дерево)

    I’ve been living in Pasadena for 8 years and never noticed this tree with its pretty fruit until now. I love the pop of red color on the dark green background. So striking. I’m amazed by how many things I still don’t know about this town and its flora. Although the fruit does look like strawberries, it doesn’t have the same taste. Too bad :). It’s said on the Internet that the berries can be used in an alcoholic beverage. Never tried it.

    И как я раньше не замечала этого дерева? А ведь уже давно живу в Пасадине. И все еще продолжаю открывать для себя что-то новое. Просто поразилась яркостью и формой этих ягодок. А выглядят они как малепусенькие ежики, шершавые на ощупь. Из интернета узнала, что называют это растение в штатах Клубничное дерево. Я надкусила ягодку—нет по вкусу на клубнику не смахивает :).
    А вы раньше видели это дерево на картинках или в живую? Пишите, а то может это я только не знала про это дерево, а весь честной народ знает? Ваша Оксана.

DIY: Vintage Pins Display Frame (Сделай сам: Коллекция в рамке)

    I’ve been collecting vintage pins and brooches for about a year and a half. It’s just a “petite” collection. Mostly costume jewelry, i.e. pins shaped like flowers and insects. I finally decided to display them in a nice frame and hang it on the wall in my craft room.

Here is how:
You will need: a black shadowbox, batting, red felt, adhesive (I used Liquid Nails), several clothes pins, and scissors.

(1)Remove the back from the display shadowbox. Measure the backing and cut out a piece of batting of the same size. Also cut a piece of red felt (add 1.2 inch for the borders).

(2) Place the batting and felt on the backing. Cut any access fabric from the angles. Use the Liquid Nails adhesive to secure the felt around the backing. Use the clothes pins to press the fabric to the backing. Let dry.

(3) Attach the pins to the felt. Put the frame back together. Hang on the wall.

   I like how my display frame turned out. A nice accent for my craft room.

    Где-то год с половиной я собираю винтажные брошки. Начала с покупки брошей в виде цветов, а потом переключилась на насекомых. Коллекция моя началась спонтанно. Просто я случайно попала в антикварный магазин, увидела витрину с винтажной бижутерией и все—сильно захотелось что-то купить. «Очнулся, гипс...», то есть в моем случае незаметно насобиралась маленькая коллекция брошей. Захотелось ее как-то красиво оформить. Вспомнила коронную фразу своего папы: все «брать» в рамочку. Вот я и оформила коллекцию в рамочку. Мне нравится. Теперь повешу на стену вместе с фото и картинами.
    Инструкцию писать не буду. Думаю, что все понятно по фото. Рамочка нужна глубокая со стеклом. Думаю такие можно купить в Икее. Как вам мои брошки? Что-нибудь приглянулось? Пишите, мне всегда интересно. Ваша Оксана.

My Style: Polka Dot Blouse + New Dangle Earrings (Что одевала: Блузка в горошек + новые серьги)

    This polka dot blouse is one of the latest additions to my fall wardrobe. Why? I just love the color of the blouse, and also this particular style (similar to a peasant blouse), because it hides my thicker middle :). I feel pretty comfortable wearing this outfit, i.e. the blouse, and flared denim from Ann Taylor Loft. If you like the blouse—you can buy it online from their store, but in different colors.
    BTW, I’m also wearing a new pair of filigree earrings! They are available for sale at my ETSY STORE

    Вот и кончился Хэллоуин и Оксана избавилась от чар злой Роксаны :) (см. предыдущий пост). Показываю свою последнюю свежую покупку, прям из магазина. Только вчера купила на распродаже. Не могла пройти мимо такого осеннего яркого цвета, а также того факта, что блуза в мелкий горошек (а горошек я люблю).
     Ну и еще подумала, что оранжевый будет сочетаться с коричневым и я смогу одеть свои новые серьги. Кстати, я ношу серьги, а вот все остальное бусы, браслеты и кольца как-то не получается. Отличных вам выходных. Ваша Оксана.
